I Wake Up

I wake up to a knock on my door
The place in my dreams – “I’ve been here before”
Shatters
All that remains
Is lost and afraid in a maze with no name
This maze of darkness so thick I can feel it encroaching
I reach for the switch to the light
I start groping
Flailing my hands
But I soon understand
No switches exist that can light up this land
The darkness is just hard but it’s just a facade
This darkness is just hard but it’s just a facade

Every fragment craves connection
Every death is resurrection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each breath is redemption

The darkness is just hard but it’s just a facade
A mask that reminds us who we are
When our hearts are open
Freed by the urgent emotions
Fear, wonder accompany discovery
The land of my ancestors pulled out from under me
Paradigm unrecognizably utterly shifted
I tried to resist it
Once I was gifted a gift so explicitly pure
Universally sought and translated
Every language and people related
Entire religions constructed their edifice
While the foundation
Stared from the precipice of exile
Destruction of homeland and certainty
Now we all wonder alone
In a burning sea of darkness
So thick we forgot what we lost
Our eyes acclimatize
But our souls know the cost

Every fragment craves connection
Every death is resurrection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each breath is redemption

My hand gropes for the switch
But where is it?
No mere electricity
Circuits and physics alone
Could never replace to be home
Breathing
Free and connected
Roots in the core of the earth
Light reflected and limitless
States of existence so infinite
Language dissolves in attempting to imprison them
Listen

Every fragment craves connection
Every death is resurrection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each breath is redemption

Every fragment craves connection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each death is resurrection
Each breath is redemption

Listen intently
Maybe detecting an echo
Our ears will relearn what our soul can’t forget so we practice
Even in hiding
The darker the darkness
The brighter the shining appears
And we were brought to be here
To learn to face to love our fears
To strengthen life by sending light
To realms consumed by endless night
To shatter shells protecting hearts from beating
Sparks were made for seeking

Every fragment craves connection
Every death is resurrection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each breath is redemption

Every fragment craves connection
Every exile brings a lesson
Each death is resurrection
Each breath is redemption

Pesach: Song of Creation

Hook:

I’m not scared of Pharoah any more
I’ve lived to see his empire fall
And I’m not scared of what’s in me
In stead I walk across the sea
I’m not scared of Pharoah any more
I’ve lived to see his empire fall
And I’m not scared of what’s in me
In stead I learnt to cross the sea

Verse 1
Imagine you and your family, slaves to brutality
The pain and insanity like babies unnaturally
Taken at birth to be drowned or just casually
Used as a brick in a monument of vanity
And you might think that the answer is force but actually
Our people were saved by the women who naturally
Thirst to create and thirst to relate
You know life always conquers perversion and hate

Verse 2
Pharaoh decreed that the men separate from their wives
And were worked so hard that they lost their drive
The women were wise and gathered food and wine
And with femininity revived their appetites

Rachel:
‘Look into the mirror, see how our faces shine
Only the living can lift up mankind
Regardless of struggles that stifle our time
We’ll make new generations to leave this behind’

[Hook]

 Verse 3

Can you imagine the courage that it takes to create a life
There in the darkest night
And of course we’re scarred inside but our task
Is turning the dark to light
And the deeds of our mothers and fathers are signs
That provide us examples to harness our lives
To the rock of Oneness, Chesed-Lovingkindness
Pesach comes as a present to remind us
Every single one of us is always in Egypt
And every single day we get the option to leave It
Every single one of us lives with constriction
But still, we can choose to listen
To the liberating music of the song of life
That can elevate existence from the wrong to right
If we learn to cry out in our moment of need
Then we’ll learn how to walk through the bellowing sea

Macabee Revolt

Hook:

We’re Maccabee rebels in hiding we’re fighting
An empire that’s trying to stop us from shining
Sparks have been hidden so we can ignite them
Life is in need of our candles, so light them

Verse 1
“Greetings from the great Antiochus
It’s a modern day and age and I want to focus on the secular -
Religion’s bogus,
I’m sick of all your Jewish hocus-pocus!
I hereby ban the Sabbath and circumcision,
Forbid the sacred tradition
And so you get me,
I’ll spit in your face,
By slaughtering pigs in your holiest place!”
We were occupied, our home’s a prison
But what can we do when the soldiers are killin
Even our children and taking our women
And this is a little known part of the story
-
That might be new to your ears, so listen:
Every bride to be was condemned to be taken
On the eve of their wedding and we
Could-not sit back and ignore this droit-de-seigneur
-
When Yehudit came to our door
She showed us her flame and spurred us to change
Her light convinced us to fight
And though the odds were horribly slight
-
We defeated Greece’s might
Bringing our Temple back to life,
Which-the-Greeks had desecrated
Now we re-dedicated…

[Hook]

Verse 2
We guerrilla attack, fight!
Deep in the dead of the night, strike!
Fear in the hearts and the minds
Of the soldiers who occupy
-
Demoralising & paralysing with fear
Because our mission is clear
We gambled and won the freedom to be ourselves
Our name is Yisrael
-
We wrestle with G-d and with man and we prevail
So now we’re setting sail
On a voyage of self-discovery
Cos Chanukah’s got me wondering
-
How did the few defeat the many?
What can I do today to let the
Flame of inner potential
Ignite the way that it’s meant to
-
There are sparks of primordial light
Inside of our hearts and our minds
We can try to stifle these sparks
We can try to deny who we are
-
Or we can choose to awaken
As partners with Creation
Life’s awaiting participation
Our daily rededication

[Hook]

Verse 3
The Greeks had taken our women
Forbidden us our religion
They filled our Temple with idols and pigs
Defiled the altar with vile things
-
That place of beauty and grace
They filled with filth and piles of waste
So when we found the Menorah, we just knew
What we had to do
-
Re-light to restore the presence Divine,
To our, most, intimate shrine
But oil would take 8 days to make and arrive,
-
But then, under the dirt, under the ground
We found a drop of oil
This tiny drop that we found
Under the ground, not even enough for one day
-
Lasted us for 8,
Til more could arrive
So we still bathe in the light
Of the candles reminding us
That we can change our lives
-
Close your eyes and look with your mind
And see, the candles around the world
See the endless light that we provide
When we, can be, ourselves.

Purim: Tested Like Esther

Hook:

The truth of this world is hidden
But people are livin in a prison
Chasing power and fame
But you know it all fades away
The truth of this world is hidden
But people are livin in a prison
If you hear the Megillah this Purim
Then you will hear it calling

Verse 1
Did you know that the name of the heroine of Purim
Esther [whispered] means the star of the morning
Breathing the rays of hope and calling
Light to disseminate cos day is dawning
-
But what was the day that Esther started?
What was the lesson that her life imparted?
Simply – we gotta take responsibility
Cos in this life we’re livin in, Divinity is hidden see
-
And some folks front but none have got the ability
To bring a miraculous delivery
Like splitting the sea we just can’t conceive
This epitome of miracles – it’s just too deep
-
And that’s why Esther was born and blessed
To suggest how we need to address this test
It’s easy to remember the light when it shines
But what you gonna do when the light, done hide?

[Hook]

Verse 2
Visualise Esther livin as a Queen
In a luxury palace, every girl’s dream
But Esther knows that nothing’s what it seems
And what seems so real can come apart at the seams
-
So when opportunity came a-knocking one day
Did-she-try-to-evade? Did-she-try-to-escape?
Or-did-she-risk her life for the saving
Her brethren from the evil plot to dead them?
-
Cos Mordechai asked her the question
Don’t-you-see-we-alllll exist in connection
There’s no escaping this interdependence
Every single one of us needs the redemption
-
And you might be a queen or a king or a jester
But one of these days you’ll be tested like Esther
So what you gonna do when the going gets hard
Will you act like yourself, or will you wear, a mask?

[Hook]

Verse 3
You know the deepest truth is counter-intuitive
On Purim wearing a mask is removing the
Mask that we usually wear as we go thru our lives
You know we all wear a disguise
-
We all play a role when it suits us fine
But none of us like to be played tho, right?
See I mentioned the fact of our inter-connection
How like it or not we’re interdependent
-
So your neighbour is more than a boss or a client
Or somebody selling what you wanna buy
Purim teaches that true celebration
Comes from repairing our fragmentation
-
Sharing our gifts whilst wearing a costume
Giving allows us to be who we want to be
I know that you’re just like me
We need each other to be, complete

[Hook]
